Root Canal Aftercare: Tips To Keep Your Dental Crowns Clean

According to the reports by American Association of Endodontists (AAE), approximately 15 million root canals are performed in the US each year.

This high number is an indication of poor oral health and the lack of motivation to visit the dentist for annual checkups.

While the root canal treatment cleans the infection of the pulp and seals the hollow teeth with a composite filling, a dental crown is needed to protect the tooth from further damage.

A dental crown is a tooth-colored protective cap that’s adhered to the tooth after root canal treatment.

It lasts anywhere between 5 to 7 years and helps to improve the smile aesthetics of patients with structural tooth damage

Let’s take a look at some of the top crown cleaning tips that help dental crowns last for a long time.

Make Sure Your Bite Is Well-Aligned

To prevent unnecessary crown wear and tear, make sure your bite is aligned. After the crown has been placed, your dentist will ask you to bite down on a piece of paper to ensure the upper and lower jaw connects.

However, with time, your teeth may shift and this may change your bite. Schedule an appointment with your dentist before the unnatural bite causes the crown to fracture and break.

Take Your Prescriptions Medicines

Your teeth will feel sore for 2 to 3 days after the procedure. Make sure you take pain medication after the invasive root canal treatment. Purchase the prescription of antibiotics and pain relief medications and take them as directed by the dentist.

Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

It’s important to adopt healthy oral habits to keep up with good oral hygiene and maintain a healthy dental crown.

Brush at least twice daily and use mild toothpaste to keep the tooth sensitivity at bay. Use clockwork motions to gently brush the teeth for at least two minutes and rinse your mouth with a fluoride mouthwash.

Floss After Every Meal

Don’t forget to floss after every meal and snack to make sure no food particles are stuck in between the dental crown.

Incorporate flossing in your daily hygiene routine to keep the teeth free from bacteria, plaque, and germs.

Avoid Chewing On Hard Objects

Don’t go back to your old eating habits that have led to dental cavities resulting in root canal treatment.

Avoid having hard nuts that might crack the crown and sticky food that gets stuck in the teeth. Be a picky eater and munch on soft foods, especially the first few weeks after the procedure.

Snack Less

Reign in your unhealthy snacking habits and stay away from processed food like chips, jellies, candies and carbonated drinks like soda and coke.

If you do have a bite of cake or a cookie in between meals, be sure to floss and brush your teeth immediately. Or at least rinse your mouth using a mouthwash.

Visit the dentist at least 2 times a year for bi-annual checks to avoid dental complications. If you have problematic teeth or have undergone previous dental fillings, it’s better to regularly go to the dentist every 2 to 3 months.
