Oral hygiene is more than just brushing your teeth every day! Here are 4 tips you should follow to maintain your dental health.
Have a Teeth-Friendly Diet
As much as we love eating certain foods, they can take an ugly toll on our teeth, stripping them of their color and sparkle.
While fruits, vegetables, nuts, and chicken are all part of a teeth-friendly diet, sodas, coffee, and alcohol can have an adverse effect on the appearance of your teeth and should be minimized. Moreover, food that is too acidic can also harm your pearly whites and cause discoloration.
To ensure a teeth-friendly diet, include a good amount of calcium, vitamin D, and fluoride in your daily meals. The latter can be obtained through water and additional supplements, if required. Green, leafy vegetables, orange juice, and dairy products are a good source of calcium and vitamin D and should be incorporated in your diet as well. It’s also recommended to include strawberries in your daily diet as they are rich in folic acid which exfoliates teeth and helps in removing food stains.
Use a Proper Brushing Technique
When brushing your teeth, it’s essential you follow the right technique. Ideally, the bristles should be at a 45-degree angle next to the gum line, making contact with both the gum as well as the teeth. An up-and-down movement should be used to brush your teeth, including the roof of the mouth.
The whole exercise should take a minimum of two minutes and be done at least twice a day. Avoid brushing too hard to prevent bleeding gums and a damaged enamel!
Clean Your Tongue
Don’t forget to clean the surface of your tongue while you brush! Scraping the tongue clean allows the bacteria present there to be removed and is as important part of the brushing exercise as cleaning your teeth is.
If neglected, the bacteria growing on the surface of your tongue can cause halitosis, which is when a person habitually has bad breath. It can also have an overall negative impact on your dental health and oral hygiene, and can cause infections.
Floss between Meals
Don’t underestimate the power of flossing! Even the soft bristles of the brush cannot reach the tiny spaces between your teeth and if left unattended, it can become filled with food debris and turn into a breeding ground for bacteria.
Flossing at intervals, especially before going to bed prevents the chances of you acquiring gum disease. This will help in getting get rid of any food residue and substances that remain between the teeth, even after you have brushed.
While these tips will help you in taking care of your oral hygiene, you must check in with your dentist every six months to get suggestions and advice for your particular case.
