Composite resin fillings, commonly known as white fillings, are a popular choice at Dentalville Panorama City in Los Angeles for filling cavities in teeth and repairing minor cosmetic dental problems. Many patients choose dental bonding as it is less expensive than other restorative dental procedures and quickly improves the appearance of the teeth.

Benefits of White Fillings

Amalgam fillings, or silver fillings, used to be used for filling minor cavities. However, white fillings have a variety of benefits, which makes them the preferred choice at our practice. These benefits include:

  • Free from mercury
  • Made to match the color of the surrounding teeth, improving the cosmetic look of the teeth
  • Typically last seven to 10 years
  • Less expensive treatment option than other restorative care options
  • Treatment can be typically completed in one visit
  • Integrates with the tooth, strengthening it rather than weakening it
  • Helps insulate the tooth, protecting it from temperature changes that can make teeth sensitive
  • Depending on the size of the cavity, can be used with little or no anesthesia

Dental Bonding With White Fillings

Dental bonding is the procedure of improving the cosmetic appearance, repairing a broken or chipped tooth or filling in a dental cavity with white fillings. The filling material "bonds" with the teeth, creating a strong finish. Dental bonding can solve a variety of dental problems, which include:

  • Filling gaps in-between teeth
  • Repairing chipped or cracked teeth
  • Improving the appearance of teeth
  • Strengthening weak teeth, which helps them last longer
  • Repairing a decayed tooth
  • Replacing old amalgam fillings to improve teeth appearance
  • Protecting teeth that have exposed gums due to a receding gum line

Dental Bonding Process

We will first perform a careful examination of your mouth and determine what dental problems need to be addressed. The different dental bonding procedures have slightly different processes:

Dental cavities must be repaired by first removing the decayed portion of the tooth. A small drill will be used to drill into the tooth. The decayed portion will be removed, leaving a small hole behind. The tooth is then prepared by etching it with a mild acid solution. The composite is mixed to match the color of the tooth. It is placed on by hand and molded and shaped. Each layer of the composite material is hardened with a special curing light. The filling will then be smoothed and polished, ensuring it is a perfect fit in your mouth.

Cosmetic repairs are done with composite resin in a similar manner. The broken or chipped teeth will be prepared before being filled with the white filling. Similarly, gaps in teeth can be repaired to look better cosmetically by placing the composite material in-between the teeth and curing it to harden it completely. Polishing the teeth and checking the bite will ensure that the bonding is comfortable.

“I was sure I just needed a filling, but when I saw that my filling had almost completely fallen away with the wand that showed my smile on the monitor, it was obvious I would need a crown or face losing the whole tooth. I was able to get a special price on the crown which made things easier for me personally. I am glad for the help and thank Dentalville for working with me and providing great service and care. Will be back”
